Volunteer Spotlight: Erin Schlitt

Meet Erin, one of our incredible Data Entry Volunteers!

Since joining Luna in September 2024, Erin has been making a meaningful impact behind the scenes. Initially tasked with archiving client data from the POST program, she has since transitioned into a Data Entry Volunteer role, where she audits and inputs client data into Luna’s database to support outcome measurement.

With a passion for child development and social systems, Erin was drawn to Luna after seeking a volunteer opportunity that offered insight into the data-driven aspects of nonprofit and intervention work. When one of her instructors shared a volunteer posting, she jumped at the chance to see Luna’s dynamic multidisciplinary approach in action.

For Erin, the most rewarding part of volunteering is witnessing how Luna and its partners operate in harmony to support children and families navigating incredibly challenging moments. “To be even a small part of this integrated response is very rewarding,” she shared.

As a social work student specializing in child intervention, Erin applies her academic learning to her volunteer role, gaining invaluable real-world experience. Her main goal? To contribute to a team making a real impact—with the added bonus of continued learning and growth along the way.

Outside of Luna, she enjoys diving into fantasy novels and exploring psychology and philosophy podcasts—a true lifelong learner at heart!

We’re grateful to have Erin as part of the Luna team.

How long have you been volunteering with Luna?

I started at Luna in September of 2024!

What do you do in your volunteer role?

I started archiving client data from the POST program. Since completing that project, I’ve started as a Data Entry Volunteer. I audit and input existing client data into Luna’s database for outcome measurement.

Why did you decide to volunteer with Luna?

I am interested in child development and social systems, and I had recently left a previous volunteer position that involved more client-facing crisis response. I was looking to transition into another position that would give me more context on the data-centred aspects of nonprofit and intervention work. When one of my instructors forwarded me a volunteer posting at Luna, I jumped at the chance to see firsthand how Luna does their dynamic multidisciplinary work!

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering at Luna?

It is a bit surreal to see the whole organization and all its partners operate in harmony to meet the needs of children and families navigating some of the most complex and challenging moments of their lives. To be even a small part of the functioning of that integrated response is very rewarding.

What are your goals when it comes to volunteer?

My main goal is to be of service as part of a team that is making a real impact! I’m also very grateful for the learning, insight, and practical experience, but at the end of the day, those are just an added bonus.

What have you learned from your career or life experiences that you can apply at Luna?

I am a social work student and will finish my degree with a designation in child intervention, so I can apply much of my education to my volunteer role. It’s been amazing to see the practical application of social work theories here at Luna, and I hope to continue to deepen my learning this way.

Outside of your role at Luna, what interests keep you busy?

I’m very much a homebody! When I have some downtime, you can usually catch me reading a fantasy novel or listening to psychology and philosophy podcasts when I'm not at work or school.
