Commitment required: Court Support Advocates must be able to commit to a minimum of one year, have availability during the day, and be willing to complete orientation and training.
Typical Shift: Due to this role being based on the scheduling of trials, shifts vary. Courts are scheduled Monday to Friday during court hours.
In this role you will:
Explain the court system to victims and their families.
Support victim and caregivers at Crown meetings.
Attend court when requested.
Explain and provide Victim Impact Statement.
Liaise with multidisciplinary partners; Crown, CCPS, RCMP, on the day of court.
Collaborate with external members and other Victim Services involved, on the day of court.
Document all interactions and conversations.
What we are looking for in this role:
Desire and ability to understand the criminal justice system and apply this understanding as an advocate for children and families where sexual abuse or serious physical harm of a child has occurred.
Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
Ability to demonstrate maturity, reliability, and punctuality as well as a strong work ethic.
Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information.
Sensitivity towards family histories, potential impacts of previous experiences, and cultural differences.
Desire to work independently and in a cross-functional team environment.
Knowledge of the criminal justice system and it processes is considered an asset.
